TORONTO POETRY SLAM is a twice-monthly spoken word competition, where the judges vote on each poem presented. This ain't your grandma's poetry!
Our home venue is the Drake Hotel Underground, 1150 Queen St. W.
Our next shows are listed at our Calendar tab.
TPS is all about ideas, with one in particular: people sharing poetry for everyone to enjoy. You'll hear pure honesty poured onto the stage, wrapped in an entertaining performance style you won't see anywhere else. Best of all, anyone can slam! Just show up to sign up for 730pm sharp. Judges from the audience score each poem between 0 and 10, basing their scores on both content n' performance. 12 poets are in the first round, then it's whittled down to 6, and the a final 3 poets battle it out in the final round. Winners get $80 and a bye into the semis. Poets can also get points towards making the Toronto Poetry Slam Team.
Other rules: No costumes, props, musical instruments, covers. Time starts as soon as poet engages the audience. Team pieces allowed during the regular season slams
Our ranking system goes by where you place in the slam. That is determined by your average score - your score from all three rounds averaged out. You'll be ranked between 1 and 12 and in case of a tie, we'll give you both 4s, for instance.
Note: While we do clean-slate scoring in the slam (each round is its own competition, not cumulative scoring) your rank is determined by your average score in the month.
For the season, your total rank are your best two slams added together. If you slam more than twice, we still take your top 2 scores.
This team competes in national and international poetry slams. For more on our scoring system, click here. Taking place at the Drake Hotel Underground, Toronto Poetry Slam features a guest poet from outside the city, in order to showcase the incredible talent powering the spoken word scene. Past guest features have included Brendan McLeod from Vancouver, Ken Arkind from Denver, Shane Koyczan, Mike McGee from San Jose, Buddy Wakefield from Seattle, Marc Smith from Chicago, The Recipe from Ottawa and many more. TPS is presented by Toronto Poetry Project, a collective of ten poets who also produce BAM! Toronto Youth Slam and niche slams such as the Geek Slam, Story Slam and the Haiku Deathmatch.
We believe in democratization of art, truth and the old proverb, "The points are not the point, the poetry is the point.".
